Useless parenting information

More thoughts on the sleeping-through-the-night question: Over the past four months, I've had people tell me, "Oh, when he gets to ten pounds, then he'll start sleeping through the night." Ten pounds came and went. Someone else told me 11. Then yet someone else said 12. A fourth person told me 13. Well, for Conrad the magic number appears to be 16 pounds. He slept through the night again last night, from 7:30 p.m. to 6:00 a.m.

So, if you're a parent of a new baby wondering when he or she will start sleeping through the night:

I have no idea. Good luck!

My pediatrician dad told us the weight thing, which is about when the child is physically capable of sleeping through the night (it doesn't automatically mean he will).

The real key is your definition of "sleep through the night." After months of 5AM feedings (and learning that CHiPs was on at 5...), we realized that sleeping from midnight to 6:00 was sleeping through the night. As in, midnight's not unreasonably late to stay up, and 6 isn't unreasonably early to get up. Especially if one parent does night duty and the other takes the morning shift.

You're getting 10.5 hours of quiet, which suggests he's been sleeping through the night for a while.

Soon enough, you'll want to spend time with the baby who already grew up and became a big guy. :-)

Conrad is getting big! Eliza was 14 lbs, 5 oz at four months. We'll find out how much she weighs now on Monday. Congrats on sleeping through the night. Not to burst your bubble, but there may be interruptions in the future: learning to roll over, teething, growth spurts, bad karma. Whatever. But enjoy it while you have it!

You have achieved the essential insight - most advice is basically just designed to give you just enough hope to hang in there just a little longer...

And to second what has already been said, savor it while it lasts. Everything is a phase of one sort or another. Hopefully this one will last a good long time!

Hmmm. Zanna's 14 lb 9 oz and sleeping about 8 hours. Nathan's perspective is great. Through the night is SUCH a relative term.
